Finding Purpose in Pet Care:

For Ashley, the journey into pet care was a natural progression fueled by her innate love for animals. From a young age, she found solace and joy in caring for pets, understanding their needs and desires with a unique empathy. As a student in NYC, Ashley embarked on a journey as a dog walker, relishing the opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse herself in the company of furry friends. Now local to Boston, Ashley is granting dream walks and adventures for pups—no magic wand needed.

Boston Dog Moms: Today, we're excited to sit down with Ashley Gouthro, the compassionate force behind The Fairy Pawsitter. Ashley, thank you for joining us. Can you share what inspired you to become an animal professional and how you got started in this field?

Ashley: Of course! I've always had a deep love for animals and a natural knack for caring for them. My journey into pet care began while I was a full-time student in New York City. In the midst of the bustling city life, I found solace in spending time with dogs as a dog walker. It was a refreshing break from the chaos, and I quickly realized that working with pets brought me immense joy and fulfillment.

Boston Dog Moms: That's wonderful to hear. Can you tell us about why you decided to start your own business and what you love most about your work?

Ashley: I started my business when my elderly dog with dementia started requiring more care. We found he enjoyed the company of other dogs and they provided him with a sense of “normalcy”. I was in a position where I could bring joy to these furry friends. When we lost my dog in October, I decided I would share the love and care I gave him with other pets. I love when people tell me that I provide a little vacation or adventure for their pets. Or that I can welcome them into my family so their pet wasn’t alone on a holiday. I get to work with a wide range of breeds and personalities. I really develop a special bond with each pet I care for.

Boston Dog Moms: That's truly heartwarming. Can you tell us about any products or services you offer through The Fairy Pawsitter?

Ashley: Absolutely! I offer walking, drop-ins, boarding for small dogs, daycare, in-home care, accessories, and courier services!

Boston Dog Moms: That's quite an impressive range of services. Can you walk us through what a typical day looks like for you as an animal professional?

Ashley: Every day is different in the world of pet care, which is part of what makes it so exciting. A typical day for me usually involves a mix of dog walks, drop-ins, and in-home care visits. I spend my days exploring different neighborhoods, ensuring that each pet receives the attention and care they deserve. Whether it's taking a leisurely stroll through the park or providing companionship to a furry friend while their owner is away, no two days are ever the same.

Boston Dog Moms: It sounds like you have a busy schedule! How do you interact with the animals you work with, and what kind of training or experience do you need to work with them?

Ashley: Every pet is different and you really have to gauge what they need. I ask a ton of questions before care takes place because I want to provide the best care possible and ensure your pet is comfortable. It is beneficial if you have had pets of your own through all stages of their life. I think having first aid training is a must.

Boston Dog Moms: That's great advice. Can you share some of the biggest challenges you face in your job, and how you overcome them?

Ashley: One of the biggest challenges is the initial separation period from when the owner has left and I show up. I have to develop trust with every pet I care for, no matter the service I am providing. This can take time, particularly with dogs or cats who struggle with anxiety.

Boston Dog Moms: Building trust is definitely important. On the flip side, what are some of the most rewarding aspects of your job?

Ashley: Some of the most rewarding aspects of my job are when the pets and their owners want to see me again. It means I have made an impression and developed a strong bond with their pet. I enjoy getting to know pets and how to best care for them. I get to see these pets get comfortable with me, open up to me and be excited to see me. I also get to provide them with something different in their day-to-day life. I get to see their joy and happiness with exploring the outdoors. I most enjoy giving the vast amount of love I have to all of my furry friends.

Boston Dog Moms: It's clear that you have a special connection with the animals you work with. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest developments and trends in your field?

Ashley: Understanding trends and developments starts with the clients! Just like with any business, you need to understand the people you work with. Speaking with pet owners and doing surveys has done wonders. Joining social media groups and researching other businesses in the area can also help.

Boston Dog Moms: That's a great approach. How do you work with other professionals, such as veterinarians, trainers, or animal behaviorists, to ensure the best possible care for the animals you work with?

Ashley: It’s a great idea to get to know the local animal hospitals where you do your services. You want to be able to have someone to call in an emergency. I rely on the advice of the professionals and would never seek medical advice outside of a veterinary practice. I think community over competition is huge and these are partnerships that can be rewarding for the pets in our care.

Boston Dog Moms: Collaboration is key. Can you describe a particularly memorable experience you've had working with animals?

Ashley: My favorite experience was having 2 dogs stay with my family and myself over the holidays. They got so much love and attention. And even had the opportunity to run around in a gated yard which they typically don’t get the opportunity to do. They were just surrounded by loving humans who doted on them all day. It was the first Christmas without my own dog in many years and it was very special to me that I got to share it with them.

Boston Dog Moms: That sounds like a truly special experience. Lastly, what advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in animal care or animal welfare?

Ashley: Find your specialty. Maybe you love working with puppies! What is something you can offer that will separate you? Maybe you are really great at training a particular command. Never sell yourself short and advertise your skill set! It’s going to take time to develop a client base and start seeing results.

Boston Dog Moms: Wise words indeed. Thank you so much for sharing your insights with us, Ashley. It's been a pleasure speaking with you.
